Our Commitment to Online Safety
At Kommons, we believe that a free community must also be a safe one. That’s why we work every day to make this digital space a place where anyone can participate with confidence, knowing that there are clear rules, active protection, and real people behind the scenes.
The Online Safety Act (OSA) is a UK law designed to make the internet safer for everyone—especially children. As an open digital platform where users can create and share content, Kommons fully embraces the responsibilities this law requires.
But beyond legal compliance, we do this because it’s the right thing to do.
What is the Online Safety Act?
The OSA, passed in 2023, is a UK law that aims to protect people from online harm—whether through illegal content or interactions that may cause emotional, physical, or psychological damage.
The law is regulated by Ofcom, the UK’s communications regulator, which also provides official guidance and codes of practice to help online services protect their users.

What are we doing at Kommons?
Kommons is a space where people can share texts, images, and take part in open conversations. Under the OSA, we are classified as a user-to-user service, which means we have a duty to:
- Take action against illegal or harmful content.
- Provide extra protection for children and young people.
- Offer clear reporting tools for users.
- Implement proactive measures to reduce risks.
- Follow and apply Ofcom’s official recommendations.
At Kommons, we feel firmly committed to sharing this policy as part of our dedication to a well-informed, safe, and conscious community.
How we handle illegal content
We’ve carried out a formal risk assessment as required by law. From that, we identified the main dangers that can arise online, and put in place measures to prevent and respond to them effectively.
We do not tolerate any of the following on our platform:
- Extreme pornography
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
- Sexual or labor exploitation—of both children and adults
- Human trafficking
- Hate speech, violence, or terrorism-related content
- Fraud, scams, and identity impersonation
- Any other illegal activity under UK law
What are we doing about it?
- We review sensitive content before it’s published.
- Our human moderators are trained to detect violations and take swift action.
- We use automated tools to flag high-risk content, including sensitive keywords and previously reported material.
- We use hash-matching technology to prevent the upload of known illegal images.
- Every post includes an easy-to-use report button so users can alert us to anything concerning.
- For serious reports, we act quickly—removing the content, suspending accounts, and notifying relevant authorities when needed.
- We have fast-response protocols for situations involving exploitation or trafficking, even when there are only reasonable suspicions.
- In sensitive areas of the platform, such as access to explicit content or publishing in restricted categories, we require age or identity verification.
Protecting minors
We recognize that children may access Kommons. That’s why we’ve conducted a Children’s Access Assessment (CAA) as required by law, to identify and reduce risks to minors.
Based on that assessment, we’ve implemented several protections:
- Mandatory age verification to access adult visual content.
- Content warnings for posts with explicit language or sensitive themes.
- Tools for creators to control who sees their content, based on age and other factors.
- A moderation team trained to identify and act on potential risks involving children.
- Immediate suspension of accounts when inappropriate behavior involving minors is detected.
What else are we doing?
Online safety isn’t a one-time task. At Kommons:
- We continuously update our policies and systems based on Ofcom’s latest guidance.
- We carry out regular internal reviews to ensure our protection tools are working effectively.
- We listen to our community and value every report, suggestion, and insight that helps us improve.
- We plan to publish a Transparency Report, where we’ll share what we’re doing to keep Kommons safe—and with what results.
- This policy is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect legal, technological, or social changes that may affect our platform.
